Thailand has been a popular destination for Australians for many years. This is hardly surprising given the great value for money and the variety of tourist attractions on offer. Planning a budget holiday can be as easy as opening up the weekend newspapers we will see dozens of holiday package deals advertised each and every week. Put these deals together with the proper travel insurance and you have the perfect package.

A hotel deals in Thailand can change from week to week but there are some consistently good packages offered which we will cover here. You should always check with your travel agent to make sure that the deals are still current, and to make sure that any special conditions will not impede your plans.

So, rather than looking at individual hotels, we will choose five regions or cities which consistently offer the best options.

Bangkok. The majority of reviews for the Lebua at State Tower consistently state that this is one of the better quality hotels in Bangkok, with great facilities and good value for money. Standing at 59 stories high, the views are simply amazing and the rooftop bar is a special feature. This hotel is always worth a look.

Bangkok. Another hotel worth your attention is the Centara Grand at Centralworld. Previous guests are simply in love with this hotel rating it as fantastic. Make sure you check it out.

Phuket. The Woraburi Phuket Resort and Spa is a popular hotel in Phuket, for which visitors have only the highest praise, especially of the staff. Many previous visitors advise you to request a pool access room which have stunning views and easy access to swimming facilities. You won’t have to worry about making a holiday insurance claim while staying here!

Phuket. The Deevana Patong Resort & Spa at Patong Beach is often rated as absolutely perfect and great value for money. The only advice that seems worthy of note is to avoid rooms at the back of the resort, and if you can afford it, upgrade to a deluxe room with private spa. It costs only a little bit extra and is well worth it.

Koh Samui. Le Paradise Boutique Resort and Spa is one of the highest rated hotels in this region. It has beautiful bungalows which overlook the startlingly white sandy beaches and has been rated as the best value for money resort in Thailand. This is very high praise at the resort lives up to this expectation.

Pattaya. The Mariott Resorts and Spa is arguably one of the most popular and famous hotels in Thailand. It is not exactly budget accommodation, in fact it has been suggested that the prices are little too steep, but it still retains the image of a tropical paradise that welcomes visitors into its quiet oasis.

Thailand is owed world-class tourist destination with hundreds of fine hotels to choose from. No matter what your budget or individual requirements, you are certain to find a hollow package to meet your needs.

For any travel to Thailand, the choice of budget accommodation is very wide indeed. It is always better to plan your holiday in advance and make the necessary bookings before you arrive so as to avoid disappointment. Don’t forget, all travel plans should include the best travel insurance you can afford, and this is especially the case when visiting Southeast Asia.

There are literally thousands of budget accommodation outlets right across Thailand and is impossible to give even an adequate cross selection to suit all tastes. So, in the interests of brevity, we will look at seven budget accommodation locations in various towns and cities across Thailand. To make this task easier will be looking at places where travellers have been able to provide comments on their experiences. This adds some validity to the assessment.

Bangkok. No list would be complete without at least some indication of accommodation in the capital city.

Ratchana Place. This hotel is located very close to Bangkok airport and is reputedly the most affordable accommodation in the district. The rooms are clean and secure and as at January 2010 were available from as little as $17 per night.

Chang Mai. One of the most popular destinations, originally made famous by the beautiful girls, there are plenty of choices when it comes to budget accommodation.

Baan Lamyai Guesthouse. Similarly priced, this comfortable guesthouse comes with double and triple bedrooms each with their own private washroom. A real feature is the beautiful dining room.

Ko Tao. A popular backpacker’s choice, Ko Tao is probably best known as a diving destination.

Ban’s Diving Resort , as backpackers as well as those seeking a little more comfort. It is situated on a prime piece of beachfront well located for some stunning diving experiences.

Ko Kut. A palm fringed tropical town located close to the sea make this an easy backpacking choice.

Klong Chao Resort. This resort consists of well made and designed timber structures, located not far from the sea along the river. Accommodation is cheap, clean and safe.

Ko Phi Phi Don. A popular destination this town has many to choose from but the best budget accommodation we can find is:

PP Twin Palms Bungalow. At less than $30 per night this beautiful hotel offers great value for money.

Mae Sot. This unusual destination has some fantastic bargain accommodation, none more so than:

Centara Mae Sot Hill Resort. This three star hotel offers clean and comfortable accommodation in a very safe environment.

Khao Lak. Located close to the Similan and Surin Islands, this is a great location for backpackers looking for a great scuba diving experience.

Briza Beach Resort costs around $55 per night but is still classified as four-star accommodation.

If you have the proper holiday insurance, travel within Thailand is a safe and rewarding destination and with so many budget accommodation options to choose from Thailand is a budget traveller’s paradise.

Each year, tens of thousands of Australians travel to Thailand, which is known as the land of smiles. There are plenty of positives for tourists in Thailand – it has an amazingly warm and stable climate, the unique regional economy means that our dollar can buy much more in Thailand, the locals are generally friendly, and tourism is one of the backbones of the country. However, there is also plenty to be cautious of in Thailand. Threats that don’t exist at home, from bird flu to frequent and violent government demonstrations mean that travel insurance is a must for the region. We look at the considerations for travel insurance holders going to Thailand.

Terrorism threats
Some travel insurance policies will cover the costs of a change of plans for terrorist threats, and some will not. Some will only cover you if the suspicion has been confirmed by the local police authorities, and may require you to provide proof of this when you make a travel insurance claim. Australian consulates have received a number of terrorist threats for Thai regions, including ones relating to popular tourist spots.

Government demonstrations
These are more prevalent in some areas of Thailand than in others. Your travel insurance may cover you for any medical emergencies incurred by public anti-government demonstrations, and could also cover you for loss of personal belongings, or needing to change your travel plans due to demonstrations arising in Thailand if they started after you had bought your insurance. Usually comprehensive travel insurance will be cover all of these instances.

What travel insurance can’t cover
There are daily reports of bombings and violence in parts of Thailand bordering Malaysia, due to terrorist activity. More than 3,400 people have been killed in the Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla provinces since January 2004. Travel insurance will not bring your life back if you lose it.

Travel insurance will usually not cover you for expenses incurred as a result of breaking the law – and in Thailand seemingly innocuous activities can be illegal. The possession of very small quantities of soft drugs can result in lengthy jail sentences, and defacing images of the monarch can result in sentences up to 15 years. This would include destroying bank notes with the king’s image on them.

Bird flu
The World Health Organisation has confirmed that there have been human deaths from bird flu in Thailand. You don’t necessarily have to eat raw chicken, handle bird droppings or touch a dead bird to get the disease, either. Improperly cooked meat from roadside stalls can be a source of bird flu, or you may pick up the bacteria form another person who has been in contact with infected birds. Travel insurance will be a necessity if you contract bird flu, not only for the medical treatment but because you will usually be required to leave Thailand as soon as possible.

Activity-related risks
Diving and snorkeling are common in Thailand, and stings from jellyfish, rays and octopuses can be fatal. If you are some regions of Thailand, the expensive but very necessary Japanese encephalitis vaccination is recommended. Divers should also be aware of decompression facilities nearby their dive sites. Make sure you familiarize yourself with local customs – touching the top of someone’s head, and showing the soles of your feet, are taboo activities in Thailand.
