For many travellers, the experience of an overseas holiday brings great anticipation and excitement matched with equal amounts of fear and trepidation. It is quite often the case that people can’t wait for take off but worry that they have not seen to all of the necessary details or made all the appropriate plans.

The good news is that it is possible to travel with reduced stress but maximum enjoyment levels! Here we give an overview of how this is possible:

Book flights and accommodation as far in advance as you can…

It is no secret that the best airfares and tariffs for accommodation tend to be available as far in advance of your departure or arrival dates as possible. Essentially, the further in advance you book, the better the prices that you will be able to secure.

Having made savings on your flights and some accommodation, you are entitled to feel very pleased with yourself and rechannel the savings you have made back into other aspects of your holiday.

Ensure that you have travel insurance cover…

If there is one thing that every traveller should have in place well in advance of their departure from Australia, it is travel insurance cover. Far too often we hear horror stories of people who have failed to purchase a travel insurance policy and have experienced the misfortune of illness, injury, theft or some other unfortunate and unforeseen event while in another country.

Failure to have adequate travel insurance protection is perilous and can end up costing a traveller a lot more than the minimal costs of travel insurance protection. There is no excuse for not having an appropriate policy, particularly when so many options of cheap travel insurance cover can be easily purchased – both online and offline.

Do some research…

While many experienced travellers thrive on the thrill of being spontaneous and making as few plans and commitments as possible, it definitely pays to do some thoughtful research into the places you will go and those that you think you might. Even by learning just a little about some of your destinations, you are bound to feel more confident and prepared and ready for some of the unique features of the places you will visit.

Many travellers find that familiarisation with a map and even some key phrases can help them to be ready to explore their destinations.

Explore accommodation options…

The range of different accommodation options that are available to travellers is quite extensive in many countries. It is usually possible to find clean and pleasant accommodation at a reasonable price in many places and by dedicating yourself to some research and consideration of the options and deals on room rates, it is definitely possible to secure a bargain.

If you take care of a number of matters before your departure and while you are away, it is certainly possible to maximise your enjoyment and minimise your levels of stress in relation to your holiday. By attending to matters such as travel insurance, you are best placed to travel in a way that promotes fun and reduces stress.

By definition, holidays are supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable. However, some polls indicate that going on a holiday ranks among life’s stressful experiences. This is alarming when it is considered that divorce, being sacked from a job and social isolation are also in this list.

So, why are holidays so stressful for some people? Perhaps it has something to do with the often extensive preparations that are necessary before the holiday begins, the need to take care of matters at home and to pack for all sorts of unknown conditions.

However, there are many things that a person can do to reduce levels of anxiety, pressure and concern that are so often present in advance and while on a holiday.

1: Organise travel insurance

Far too many travellers assume that travel insurance is an ‘optional extra’. This incredibly foolish and risky approach is dangerous – there are a number of cheap travel insurance options available and these can be tailored to suit your needs and the activities of your holiday. For example, you can purchase online travel insurance and multi trip travel insurance. For such a meagre investment, you can gain the confidence that, should the unexpected and dreaded occur, you will be protected and covered.

Of course no one likes to anticipate that something awful will occur, but international travel insurance can eliminate the stress, hardship and disadvantage that will result if something does occur. Knowing that you have reliable travel insurance cover in place can certainly help you to relax and enjoy your holiday.

2: Book in advance

Of course, you will need to have booked your flights and perhaps other transport and accommodation in advance of your departure. While it can be nice to be a little spontaneous, a certain amount of security comes from knowing that you have lodgings secured and knowing exactly how you will get to them. You may not want to book accommodation for every night of your holiday, but having even a night or two booked early in the holiday can help you to relax, rest a little, enjoy some comfort and plan the next part of your journey.

Keep in mind too that it is often the case that the further in advance you book, the better the price of your flight, other travel or accommodation tariff.

3: Allow plenty of time

Unfortunately, airports can be stress-inducing places by nature. There are often long queues, flight delays, irate people and stressed out staff.

However, if you allow yourself plenty of time to travel to the airport, check in, proceed through immigration and arrive at your boarding gate, you will find that the whole experience is altogether less stressful and more enjoyable.

Rushing and panicking is not the way that you want to begin or continue your holiday. Allow plenty of time and try to make the most of the whole airport experience. If nothing else, try to enjoy the exciting energy that is also present as people (including you!) set off for all sorts of amazing destinations.

No one sets out to have a stressful and hectic holiday. However, far too many people find that the journey they had long-planned and looked forward to, is not as relaxing and enjoyable as they anticipated.

By taking some steps to be organised and prepared, it is possible to reduce the amount of travel-related stress that you experience.

In the lead up to your departure for an international holiday, it is common to feel consumed (and even a little overwhelmed) by the preparations that have to be made. As well as making flight and accommodation bookings, your mind sooner or later turns to the seemingly enormous and very confusing task of packing!

While most of the clothing, shoes and even toiletries that you travel with find their way into a suitcase or other bag that will be checked in and carried in the hold of the aircraft, some of the most important and absolutely vital items for a smooth, stress-free and enjoyable trip should be carried in your hand luggage.

Everything from your passport to your travel insurance details needs to be transported in your carry on luggage. Your cabin baggage allocation is limited and security restrictions apply to what can and cannot accompany you on a plane, but here we take a look at four of the essential items to be found in your carry on luggage.

1: Passports and other travel documents

Your crucial travel documents must always travel with you and certainly not in your checked luggage. Your passport, itinerary, accommodation and transfer details and travel insurance policy should always be carried with you, but kept in a secure, safe and accessible place. Keep in mind too, that photocopies should be made of all your important documents and these should be stored separately from the originals. It is also advisable to leave copies of your important documents with someone at home.

Before travelling, do not fail to take out appropriate and sufficient travel insurance cover, perhaps get a few travel insurance quotes to inform your decision. It is perilous to travel without such protection and with so many flexible and cheap travel insurance options available, there really is no excuse not to cover yourself in this way. Be aware that it is possible to get multi trip travel insurance and online travel insurance.

2: Fragile and valuable items

Items that are valuable to you or are fragile and could be easily damaged should be carried with you. Checked luggage is often not treated gently and so it is not worth taking the risk – carry breakable and valuable items in your carry on luggage.

Electronic equipment (such as cameras, laptops and electronic games), cash, keys and jewellery apply to this category.

3: The items that you need to sustain you

In your carry on luggage, you should include enough of the items that would be required to ‘keep you going’ in the event that your checked luggage becomes lost. (This is an unfortunate reality for a surprising number of people). Include at least two changes of underwear, an extra set of clothes, including socks, and all of the prescription or over the counter medicines that you need.

4: Toiletries

Be sure to include the toiletries that you need and use everyday in your carry on luggage. You may like to pack a toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste, items for personal care and hygiene, items used for facial care, a small bottle of shampoo and conditioner and the lotions that you use. To avoid spills, be sure to pack these items in zip lock storage bags.

Knowing what to include in a small carry on bag can be difficult. However, a good rule to follow is to pack as though your carry on bag is the only bag you will have for two days. Ultimately, your carry on luggage should include only the items that you really need and certainly, all of your precious items and travel documentation.

In this day and age, and with different parts of the world so well connected through technology and communication, many of us love to travel. The opportunity to see and experience different countries, cultures and ways of life is often appealing and seen as a wonderful life investment.

There are many valid reasons why humans love to travel. Here we take a look at five of these.

1: Travel can be done safely

International travel and long haul flights are now seen as one of the safest ways to travel – and far safer than travelling by motor car. It is incredible to think that we can step aboard a plane and, in a matter of hours, land on the other side of the world.

2: We can be protected while we travel

Increasingly, travellers are recognising the incredible importance of travel insurance. In fact, any traveller would be foolish to leave Australia without this form of protection.

Absolutely no one anticipates needing to use the travel insurance cover in which they have invested, but in the event that something unfortunate and unexpected does occur, travel insurance offers incredible relief and reassurance.

Travelling without insurance cover and then needing medical treatment, a medical evacuation or replacement of your belongings can be incredibly expensive…so much so that people in this situation have had to remortgage their homes or cash in their life savings. Such expense really is unnecessary when a vast range of flexible and cheap travel insurance options are available.

All travellers should ensure that they have an appropriate level of cover that is compatible with their needs, destinations and the types of activities that they will do while away.

3: Travel presents the opportunity to learn about different people

Although there are often common characteristics and qualities that unite people the world over, travel allows us to gain insight into the lives of people in countries and cultures that are far from our own.

Too often we become consumed with our own lives and ‘worlds’ and the opportunity to interact with and learn about people in other parts of the world can be remarkably refreshing.

4: Travel can help us to care about others

Very often, the experiences that we have while travelling touch our hearts and increase our empathy and care for other people. Care for others is often absent in the world and travel has the potential to foster this positive quality more so than any other means.

Although we can see television footage of situations of international concern, travelling to affected places makes it all the more real, enhances our understanding and the level at which we are personally moved and affected.

5: To understand that our beliefs are not universal

As we go about our day to day lives, it is easy to think that our values and our ways of doing things are right. Travel assists us all to realise that there is no one right way and part of the beauty of the world and humanity more broadly is that there are different ways of thinking about and responding to situations.

With such exposure and enhanced understanding, we can also be supported to understand that there is often no one correct solution or approach to problems. Instead, we may realise that different approaches have merit and worth.

There really is an infinite range of reasons to travel. The opportunity to travel can provide an individual with an unparalleled opportunity to learn about themselves and humanity and have a greater appreciation of the world.

An overseas holiday is a big event in most of our lives. For many, it is something that is aspired to, thought about and carefully planned for quite some time. It also involves a significant financial outlay and so it follows that we want to make sure that an overseas holiday is always successful and enjoyable.

Why do we holiday?

Holidays are so important to us because, having worked hard for so many weeks, months and even years, we look forward to and plan our vacations.

Essentially, holidays deliver a much needed and much appreciated break from our day to day lives and facilitate opportunities for rest, relaxation and fun which are simply not available when we are tied to our jobs, family commitments and everyday responsibilities.

The end product of feeling refreshed, energised, inspired and with renewed enthusiasm makes holidays all the more worthwhile and important.

So, how can we ensure our overseas holidays are successful?

Invest in travel insurance:

No one likes to contemplate the possibility of things going wrong or unfortunate circumstances befalling them, but travel insurance offers vital protection against such things disadvantaging us more than they need to.

All too often, travellers approach travel insurance as an ‘optional extra’. It is dangerous to fall into the trap of thinking ‘It will never happen to me’. Experience shows that almost all travellers who have cause to use their travel insurance did not expect to have an accident, require a medical evacuation or have their belongings stolen. Travel insurance is therefore one of those things that you hope you will never have to use, but are extremely grateful to have in place if there is a need to use it.

No traveller should be without cover when it is considered that so many options for cheap travel insurance are available. Such policies can be tailored to your trip, the places you will visit and the activities in which you will be involved and cost just a fraction of the costs you will face should you experience an unfortunate and unforeseen event without having adequate travel insurance protection.

Spend time planning:

Although it can be nice to be spontaneous and have few definite plans in place when you travel, some research, forethought and planning can be incredibly useful. When you know a little about where you are going and the circumstances you will find, the sense of confidence that results is indeed positive.

It can be difficult to do a lot of background reading and planning while you are away, so doing this in advance of your departure is very useful.

Investigate accommodation options:

Similarly, you may not know precisely where you will stay every night of your trip, but doing some preparatory work can help you to gain a sense of the type of accommodation that you prefer, the locations that you desire and an idea of the rates that you can expect to pay.

There is an extensive range of accommodation options available and it is possible to find lodgings that suit every budget, preference and need. Regardless of whether you choose luxury or more basic accommodation, you should expect your lodgings to be clean and comfortable.

A successful and enjoyable overseas trip is always possible with a little planning in advance of your journey. It pays to be organised and by devoting a little attention to detail before you leave, you are better positioned to enjoy a fun and fulfilling holiday.

Time and time again, experienced travellers stress that in order to experience a fantastic holiday, you need to be organised. This is not to say that you have to have a watertight schedule in place and know what you are doing at every second of every day of your time away, but it does mean that seeing to some of the most significant and pivotal details in advance of your journey will make your life a lot easier.

So, why be organised when you are travelling?

1: To give yourself plenty of time

All too often, people end up desperately trying to make bookings and secure reservations just before they are due to depart. If you are someone who thrives on adrenaline and loves the thrill of the last minute, then this may be OK. For the rest of us, frantically trying to make arrangements shortly before we are due to travel induces stress, panic and the fear that everything that is needed will not be organised in time.

Do yourself a favour and plan, book and confirm arrangements as far in advance as you possibly can. With this breathing room, you will feel more confident about how your holiday will unfold and assured that you have seen to the crucial aspects of your holiday.

2: Make all necessary arrangements

Aside from flight bookings and reservations for accommodation, travellers also need to think about passport validity, the need for visas, travel insurance and, quite possibly, the need for transfers.

Travel insurance is certainly one of the most important things to organise, but regrettably is often overlooked by too many travellers. An overwhelming number of us think that we will never need it and fall in to the trap of believing that undesirable circumstances will not befall us. While no one actively hopes that they will have reason to use their travel insurance, having a comprehensive policy in place that is appropriate for your travel needs affords a level of confidence that you are protected should something unfortunate occur.

With so many cheap travel insurance options now available, travel insurance should never be seen as an unnecessary expense or optional extra that can be eliminated so that money can be allocated elsewhere in your holiday budget.

3: Have some idea of what you can expect

When you are organised prior to your travels, you have a far better idea of what to expect. Aside from knowing about the weather conditions you are likely to experience and therefore the clothing and equipment that you need to pack, a little research prior to departure will prepare you for the sights that you may see, the cultures into which you will gain insight and the customs, values and practices of the people you are likely to meet.

International travel exposes us to different lifestyles, morals and beliefs and this is certainly a vital reason for why many of us choose to travel. With organisation and some research and forethought, you will be better prepared to behave and respond appropriately in terms of cultural practices and values in different parts of the world and, because you have greater understanding and insight, are better positioned to behave respectfully.

Being organised is the most important and significant factor in having a wonderful holiday. Taking steps to ensure your organisation prior to your departure certainly pays dividends while you are away.

Although overseas travel and the prospect of seeing the world, meeting new people and learning about different ways of living can be incredibly exciting, it can also pose some unique and significant sources of stress. Prior to travelling, there is a lot to be thought about, arranged and confirmed and it is not rare for travellers to find it difficult to be as organised and efficient as they really need to be.

However, there are a number of effective ways to reduce the metaphoric headaches that can come with travelling. Here we take a look at five of these:

1: Ensure that flight bookings and accommodation arrangements are made as far in advance of your travel dates as possible. At the risk of stating the obvious (most travellers do recognise that this is the most crucial aspect of their travel arrangements), the number of people that try to make last minute arrangements is actually astounding.

When you are organised and make bookings in advance, you can justifiably feel a sense of confidence and will probably secure better value for the flights you take and tariffs on the accommodation that you book.

2: Travel insurance is far too frequently overlooked by many overseas travellers. Of course, travel insurance is something that you hope you will not need to access, but it is better to be safe than sorry – it is an unnecessary risk to travel without this form of protection.

With so many cheap travel insurance options and possibilities now available, you would be foolish to leave Australia without an appropriate policy in place. Affordable insurance is within the budget of almost all travellers and, let’s be honest, to find yourself without but in great need of travel insurance, will ultimately prove far more costly.

3: Ensure that you are prepared and arrive at the airport well in advance of your flight time…three hours in advance is ideal. Remember that check in closes in advance of the scheduled flight time and you need to clear immigration before boarding your flight.

All of this can be a little stress inducing, but if you feel organised and have plenty of time at your disposal, you will be far more inclined to enjoy the experience and feel a sense of calm about your travel arrangements.

4: Part of being organised in this way is making sure that you have all of the necessary documentation with you. A valid passport is of course essential, but ensure that you have also obtained any visas that may be required and have a copy of your itinerary, accommodation details and travel insurance policy with you (not in your checked luggage).

5: Overseas travel is not just about the things that you will see and the experiences you will have while you are abroad. There are things at home that need to be thought about and tended to, not the least of which is your home and its security.

Before you leave, put a checklist together of all the things that need to be done – from mail being collected, to rubbish bins being put out – and make arrangements for family, friends or neighbours to help you with these tasks. Keep in mind that it is highly advisable that your home appears ‘lived in’ while you are away; an obviously empty house is far too attractive to thieves.

While there is a lot to do to prepare for an overseas trip, not all of it needs to be stressful or anxiety provoking. The key is to be organised and when you feel confident that all arrangements are in order and you have all of the required documentation, you are far more likely to experience and enjoy a great holiday in which your relax and have fun.

Taking off to an international destination is exciting for many, but for the inexperienced traveller, foreign travel can be confusing and in some cases, anxiety provoking. Fortunately, the aeroplane flights of most people are quite uneventful, but there are steps that can be taken to lessen the likelihood of problems arising.

So, what should all travellers know about foreign travel?

#1: No Australian citizen travelling outside of Australia should take the risk of travelling without travel insurance. Travel insurance cover affords you the protection and assurance that, should something unfortunate and unexpected occur, you will be covered, safe and will not face incredible financial expense.

A significant range of cheap travel insurance options are available and in light of this, there is no reason for a person to travel without an appropriate insurance policy.

#2: Flight delays and rescheduling are an unfortunate and sometimes unpleasant fact of air travel. However, when booking flights, travellers should be cognisant that departures early in the day are usually less likely to be delayed than flights later in the day. Particularly if you need to make a connecting flight or be in a certain place at a certain time, it can be worthwhile booking a flight as early in the day as you can.

#3: Ensuring that you have a valid passport is key to your journey. Many countries (including Australia) may refuse entry to individuals that do not have at least six months validity remaining on their passport. Therefore, it pays to ensure that your passport is up to date.

#4: Before you travel, make photocopies of the photograph page of your passport. You should keep one copy with your luggage, one with you at all times and provide additional copies to friends or family so that the information can be accessed in the event of an emergency.

#5: Your foreign travels may take you to destinations that typically experience a range of weather conditions and temperatures. Consequently, it is a very wise idea to pack a range of items that will keep you comfortable and warm or cool enough, no matter what the weather conditions.

#6: Still on the subject of what to pack, do make sure that you have clothing that is appropriate for the cultures that are characteristic of the places that you will visit. It is important for travellers to respect cultural differences and quite often, travellers need to be mindful of the garments that they wear and how they wear them.

#7: Some foreign countries have very strict laws relating to customs. The purchase, import and export of food, animal and plant products are restricted in many countries and travellers also need to be aware of limits that apply to the amounts of cash that an individual can take into or out of a country. Ignorance is no excuse and travellers are expected to know the laws that apply in and to the countries that they are visiting.

#8: It is important that travellers to foreign countries provide a number of friends and relatives with copies of their travel plans. Flight and accommodation details should be provided as this will help to facilitate contact with you in the event of an emergency, natural disaster or problem in an area in which you may be travelling.

#9: Five days before you travel, it is a very good idea to check and confirm your flight and accommodation arrangements. Although many airlines now make it possible for passengers to use automated check-in facilities, checking your flights and accommodation and confirming details a number of days in advance will allow you to make alternative arrangements if there are any problems.

Travelling to a foreign country is exciting! A person’s journey can be enhanced by taking steps to make their journey as well organised and comfortable as possible.

Especially during the cold and grey Winter months, the thought of travelling to warm and tropical destinations can be incredibly enticing. Tropical countries offer the possibility of adventure and excitement and an experience that is vastly different from life at home.

However, when travelling to many tropical locations, preparation and organisation is critically important. All travellers should ensure that they have consulted a physician regarding precautions that should be taken in terms of health and well-being and all travellers should ensure that they have appropriate and sufficient travel insurance cover.

In this article we offer seven tips for travellers journeying to warm and tropical locations:

#1: Consulting with a specialist travel agent regarding your plans to travel to a tropical destination can be a great way of preparing for a fulfilling and enjoyable holiday. Quite often, people who have visited destinations that you are interested in seeing will provide you with the details of suitably knowledgeable travel agents and this is preferable to selecting a travel agent on the basis of an internet search or a stroll through a shopping centre.

#2: Consider planning your transportation and accommodation well in advance. Although the freedom of having few plans and arrangements in place can be appeal to many travellers, being spontaneous can be difficult in some countries, including a number of tropical destinations. The difficulty of finding suitable transport and accommodation in some countries can be exacerbated by language and time limitations in some places.

#3: Undertake plenty of research before you depart for your journey. It is worthwhile learning about local customs, traditions and values and the things that are taboo or disapproved of by the culture you will be visiting. Regardless of the place(s) that you travel, it is vitally important to be respectful of cultural differences.

#4: Communication is always enhanced if you are able to speak some basic phrases and questions in the local language. Learning just a little of the language will increase your confidence and will sometimes increase the willingness of local people to assist you; in many parts of the world, some effort to learn phrases is significantly appreciated.

#5: All travellers should ensure that they have appropriate insurance cover in place and this is especially so for those visiting tropical locations. There is nothing worse or more perilous than finding yourself in the precarious situation of having no insurance protection when something unexpected goes wrong. Of course, many of us have heard horror stories of travellers who have required extensive medical care or medical evacuation due to unforeseen circumstances, but do not have the necessary travel insurance in place.

Cheap travel insurance cover is available and, in light of this, there are few reasons to justify travelling without the protection and assurance afforded by travel insurance. However, those visiting tropical destinations should ensure that the cover they take out is appropriate for the countries they will visit and the conditions they will encounter.

#6: When you travel to tropical countries, be sure to remain cool and calm and be flexible at all times. Travellers need to be mindful of their own safety and do all that they can to reduce the extent to which they ‘stand out’ as tourists. Ultimately, travellers need to be prepared for the unexpected and unplanned for circumstances.

#7: Travel in a tropical country can provide some of the most exciting, memorable and rewarding experiences that an individual will have in their lifetime. Travellers should try to make the most of their experiences and time away and at all times, keep an open mind and positive demeanour.

While it is important to be prepared and organised for travels to any destination, it is particularly necessary to be thoroughly prepared for travels to warm and tropical countries. If a person is well prepared, they are best placed to have an enjoyable and fulfilling experience in a country and culture that may be significantly different to that that the person experiences every day.

The good news for pregnant women is that travelling while pregnant is usually safe. In fact, getting away on a holiday is just the thing that many pregnant women need to help them relax and prepare for the birth of their baby and life caring for a newborn.

While travelling while pregnant is safe for a large number of women, there are precautions that all expecting women can take to promote their comfort and well-being. Even more than other travellers, pregnant women should ensure that they have the necessary travel insurance cover and clearance from their health professional to confirm that the woman is healthy enough to travel.

So, what can pregnant women do to enhance their health and comfort while travelling?

#1: Take plenty of snacks

Ensure that you are well-nourished when you travel (regardless of whether you are travelling by road, air or sea) by snacking as and when necessary. Many women who have travelled while pregnant recommend carrying plenty of snacks, not only for situations of emergency hunger but to help ease some of the discomfort that may accompany pregnancy.

#2: Move around

No matter whether you are travelling in an aeroplane or car, it is important for pregnant women to stretch and get up and move around, as often as hourly. Particularly women who are in or nearing the final stages of their pregnancy need to move around in this way and stretching and moving often will help to prevent stiffness and soreness as well as lower the risk of blood clots.

#3: Travel insurance

If you are pregnant and travelling outside of Australia, it is important to have travel insurance cover in place. Although cheap travel insurance options are available for travellers generally, pregnant women should ensure that the policy they purchase provides sufficient cover for pregnancy.

Although you may end up paying a little more than you would for travel insurance when not pregnant, the confidence and assurance that comes from knowing that you have protection should anything go wrong while you are away is well worth the price difference.

#4: Be organised and carry records

Although you and your physician may anticipate no problems while you are away, you really should carry a copy of your prenatal record with you. Also, you should speak with your doctor about the need for recommended vaccinations and carrying a record of your immunisation status can be advantageous.

Keep in mind that travelling in the last few weeks of pregnancy is rarely recommended and some airlines adhere to this practice. If you are nearing the very final stages of your pregnancy and need or would like to travel, you should speak with the airline before booking a flight.

#5: Drink plenty of water

Women who are expecting require even more fluid than usual. Travelling heightens the possibility that you will become dehydrated and so it is a great idea to always carry a water bottle with you and sip from it often.

#6: Dress comfortably

No matter whether you are travelling in a car or on an aeroplane, ensure that you are dressed comfortably and in garments that can help you to stay warm or cool. Wearing layers can assist you to feel comfortable in air conditioned environments where the temperature control is out of your hands.

Most pregnant women are able to travel safely and comfortably and, by following the aforementioned tips, can ensure that their travels are enjoyable and as stress-free as possible.
